Treatment is usually symptomatic
- Your doctor may prescribe topical ointments (anesthetic medications or over-the-counter agents) and pain relievers for temporary relief. You may be advised to rinse mouth with a warm-water solution and eat bland foods as this can decrease discomfort. Antimicrobial mouth rinses at times can help to decrease the irritation.
- Antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent or treat secondary infection.
- Steroid medications may be needed for people with more severe disease. Steroids hasten healing of the ulcers and prevent them from becoming larger. People with very severe disease may be prescribed oral medications.
- You may be prescribed iron, folate or vitamin B12 as canker sores improve when these deficiencies are treated.
